April is Lyme Disease Awareness Month.  Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is caused by the bite of an infected deer tick.  Deer ticks live in shady, moist areas at ground level.  The also live in lawns and gardens.  Deer ticks cannot jump or fly so they get on people and animals by direct contact.  Ticks are most active during the months of May through July.  Be sure to protect your pets and yourself from Lyme disease by following several simple steps.  Pets should be treated with a tick preventative or wear an approved tick collar.  Dogs should be vaccinated with the Lyme Disease vaccine yearly.  Keep pets and yourself out of long grass, and perform a full body check on pets and people when coming in after hiking or spending time outside and remove any ticks promptly.  Wear light colored clothing, long pants and shirts and tuck pants into boots or socks.  Consider using an approved insect repellant on clothing to protect yourselves.  If you have any questions about Lyme Disease and your pets be sure to call your veterinarian, and if you believe you have symptoms of Lyme Disease contact your physician immediately for treatment.
